Exit path cleared for wantaway Argentine...

Liverpool have revealed that they have agreed terms with Barcelona for a deal that could take Javier Mascherano to Catalonia.

The Argentine midfielder has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months about his future, with Inter as well as Barca linked with a move.

His reported refusal to play for the Reds against Manchester City on Monday evening has led to criticism from many quarters and reportedly annoyed several team-mates.

But it looks as though the way has now been cleared for the midfielder to leave Anfield.

"Liverpool Football Club have agreed terms for the transfer of Javier Mascherano to FC Barcelona," the statment on the Reds' official website reads.

"The Spanish club have now been given permission to speak to the Argentina midfielder."

Barcelona have also confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the clubs for the transfer of the player, with a four-year deal on the verge of being agreed.

"FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Javier Mascherano to the club for the next four seasons," a statement on the Catalan club's official website read.

"The deal was closed after intensive efforts made by the club in the final hours and through the player himself in the negotiations.

"Barcelona will report the details of the operation once the player passes the medical and the transfer is concluded.

"It is hoped Javier Mascherano will arrive in Barcelona this weekend."
